Perry Rhodan English Homesite FAQ
(C) 1997 by VPM and John Foyt
Who or What Is Perry Rhodan?
To answer this question we must give two answers. On the one hand, Perry Rhodan is the title of the world's largest science fiction series. On the other hand, Perry Rhodan is the main character of the series.
The series was begun in 1961 by K. H. Scheer (Karl-Herbert Scheer) and Clark Darlton (Walter Ernsting). Since then some 22 other authors have contributed to the series, of which 10 have been regular contributors. There are three main series which appear weekly, a pocket book series which appears monthly, and a "silver volume" that is published every four months. Moreover there is a Lexicon and various Technical Manuals with cross-sectional blueprints.
At present, the main series of approximately 1,800 issues has been divided into 27 "cycles" of, usually, 50 or 100 issues each and spanning a period of almost 3000 years not including time spent time-travelling. With issue #1800 a new cycle, called Bridge to Infinity, has begun.
If Perry Rhodan Is the Main Character How Did He Live so Long?
Thanks to alien devices called Cell Activators (and, later, Cell Activator Chips) Rhodan and a small number of other companions no longer age and are fairly resistant to disease and poisoning. Although they can be killed they are relatively immortal as long as they keep their Cell Activators on or near their bodies (the Cell Activator Chip is implanted in the shoulder).
These devices were supplied to Rhodan and his companions by a psionic entity (a Super-Intelligence) known as It, who attempts to guide the development of this region of the universe. Originally, it was thought that It granted the Cell Activators to beings It thought would bring unity to the Milky Way. It was later learned that even It was a player in a much larger game involving other Super-Intelligences, other universes, and beings of even more power and higher development than the Super-Intelligences. It had chosen and guided Rhodan and his companions to help him increase his "sphere" of influence and evolve into a higher being yet and bringing along with It the inhabitants of It's sphere of influence.
So, What Has Happened in the Last 1799 Issues?
So much has happened that one can only start at the beginning.
In 1971 Rhodan landed on Luna and discovered a ship of stranded Arkonides, including Khrest and Thora. In exchange for a promise to take them home they help Rhodan to develop Terra into a small but energetic galactic power. Over the centuries Rhodan (sometimes with the help of It) and his followers have striven to bring the peoples of the galaxy together. Despite many setbacks a Galacticum, a loose confederation of the galactic peoples (many of them non-human), has developed.
What Happened at the End of the Last Cycle?
Rhodan and the crew of the Base had journeyed into the Great Void on a scientific mission. Because of a time distortion they return to the Milky Way much later than they had expected, to discover that over 30 million galactics have left the Milky Way to travel to the Hirdobaan Galaxy where the Hamamesch reside. Under the influence of the Hamamesch most of the inhabitants of the Milky Way had become painfully addicted to Hamamesch technology. The Galacticum dispatched a fleet of Blues (immune to the Hamamesch effect) to the Hirdobaan Galaxy to help Rhodan find a cure to the Hamamesch addiction. Despite this, Rhodan's hopes are centered on Geo Sheremdoc, the Terran Commissioner of the L.F.T. and Cosmic House Boss, though, the reader is aware, he is also hoping that this will convince the Galacticum to strengthen its fleet. Finally, Rhodan, the Base, and the Blue fleet are successful in healing most of the galactics. Still, there are casualties and not every planet is freed from the effects of the addiction.
In what Year Is the Story-Line Currently Occuring?
In issue #1799 the story-line concluded in the year 1220 NGC (New Galactic Calendar = 4,808 AD). Issue #1800 opens up sixty years later and the reader is plunged into a galaxy in which mysterious events have been occuring.

Walter Ernsting, aka. Clark
Darlton
Co-Creator of the Series, Author of the Second Issue and
"Father" of Pucky
First novel in the series: Die Dritte Macht ("the Third
Power") - #2
Last Novel in the Series: Der Verlorne ("the
Lost") - #1622
Born in Coblenz in 1920, Ernsting published
his first novel in the year 1955, UFO in the Night
Sky. Interestingly, it was only published because of a
trick used by Ernsting. Because German publishing houses were not accepting
books by German authors he submitted it under the pseudonym "Clark Darlton" and
implied that it had been translated from an English original. His bluff worked
partly because he was active as an interpreter at the time. The novel received a
German Hugo Award two years later. In the early '60's he planned and began
publishing the Perry Rhodan series with his friend K. H. Scheer. He
invented the name "Perry Rhodan." Next to Artist Johnny Bruck no one was
involved with the series longer than Ernsting. He also wrote many issues of the
Atlan series.
Ernsting is considered the "Great Old Man" of German SF-fandom. Later in his career he wrote only a few books because he had moved to Ireland and manuscripts had to be delivered via international post. Most of these novels centered on Ernsting's second most popular character, Pucky (called "Gucky" in the original German). Some of the novels, however, concerned other scintillating series characters/concepts such as Ernst Ellert, Barkon, Harno, and Balton Wyt. Finally, in the "Readers' Contact Page" of Moebius (issue #1700) he announced his official withdrawal from writing the series. Fortunately, he has remained somewhat active in planning the direction of the series.
His son, Robert, conveyed his greeting to fans at the Perry Rhodan Birthday Convention in Garching. Unfortunately, technical difficulties prevented him from making a "live" appearence. Currently he lives in Austria.
Walter Ernsting is celebrating his 77th birthday this June 13th and accepting greetings addressed through his son. He may also sign autographs if the sender includes a return envelope. This is difficult but not impossible to arrange from North America. Talk to your local post office about details.

First Novel in the Series: Die Harmonie des Todes ("Harmony of
the Dead") - #1328
Lastest Novel in the Series: Kontakt mit einem
Killer ("Contact with a Killer") - #1835
Born in 1962, this author is sometimes
refered to as the "quiet giant from the North" by his
colleagues. Remaining in the background, he prefers to
entertain his colleagues and fans with colourful novels. For a year he developed
his ideas as part of the "Exposition"-team of the series. Whether it was the
artificial system of the Fourteenth Level of the Endreddes District or the
ecology of the planet Canaxu where man and animal exist with plants in an
unbelievable but scientifically plausible synergy, Feldhoff's specialty is
conceiving and developing fantastic backgrounds for the greatest SF-series in
the world.
The basic undertaking of Feldhoff's writings is: "It is absolutely important to offer the reader a logical world which is still interesting.". "When the tension can be built up and the point of the story still be told then it is difficult to go far wrong." to say nothing of the fascinating characters who abound in Feldhoff's novels.
The author, who lives and works in Oldenburg, has never provided clearer proof of this than in recent years. His latest proof was the anniversary volume Moebius, in which he expanded the Perry Rhodan cosmology from a basic building block of the series and earned himself a position among the best writers on the series.
The decision to become a writer hit Feldhoff while he was studying economics, "In 1984, after graduating from college I had no studying to do anymore and wrote something.". The resulting short story was, at first, only a page long. One year later he published a revised version of it. Feldhoff has been a sensation from the beginning. Early in 1987 his pocket book novel, der Alpha-Asteroid ("the Alpha-Asteroid"), came out. After that he was invited to join the writing team by Horst Hoffmann. With that the barely twenty-five year old author began the novel die Harmonie des Todes ("the Harmony of the Dead") with its fascinating description of an extraterrestrial. Numerous pocket books and novels in the Perry Rhodan universe quickly followed. In addition, Feldhoff wrote short stories (for anthologies) and radio plays.
His second source of support is Cosmic Productions. Together with draftsman Dirk Schulz he created the Indigo series which has been published by the Munich Splitter publishing house and has already reached its fifth volume. It has proven remarkably successful, appearing in both Belgian and French markets. For a German comic series it has an exceptional appearence.

First PR Novel: Mission der Flibustier ("Mission of the
Flibustier") - #963
Last PR Novel: die Schrottsammler ("the
Scrapmetal Collector") - #1826
Born in 1938, Peter Griese became involved
with the Perry Rhodan series as an enthusiastic
reader and became a writer in the '70's producing a number
of short stories and, later, novels. A diplomaed engineer in electro-technology
(1977) he published his first novel under the title Im Bann der
Psi-Intelligenz ("In the Thrall of the Psi-Intelligence") within the
Terra Astra series. Some Perry Rhodan pocket books followed then
he began writing for the main Perry Rhodan and the Atlan series.
With the Atlan series Griese was occasionally wrote series of consecutive
stories. Some of the most fascinating adventures on board of the generation
spaceship Sol were his work.
In 1986 Griese decided to become a full-time writer. For two years he was primarily responsible for the "Perry Rhodan Computer", the "Perry Rhodan Report" and the "Ship Diagrams". It was through these works that he became known as the "Grey Eminence", a man whose effect on the series most readers were scarcely aware of yet was an important part of the Perry Rhodan universe. "These three components are important elements that enable the readers to relate more strongly with Perry Rhodan", the author argued, "Many of these contributions create an important additional reference to the daily reality.". As a result of his efforts regular readers developeded a method of reading an issue of Perry Rhodan that was almost as a ritual. The weekly Perry Rhodan novel would be turned over to Peter Griese's "Perry Rhodan Computer" and reading begun at the end of issue. Here the reader would be plunged into a continuting look at the "scientific" background of the series. This deepened the reader's understanding of the series.
Every four weeks the readers would also get to enjoy the "Ship Diagrams", a section showing cut-away views of spaceships, planetary stations, robots, and the like (usually related to the action currently occuring in the series). Griese was responsible for coordinating the activities of the dozen or so draftsmen spread across Germany who were involved in producing these diagrams.
If this weren't enough he also the "Perry Rhodan Report" every four weeks which was a colourful mixture of popular science articles, current data on astronomy and space trips, and information from VPM as well as drawings, comics, and novelties from the fans.
He loved to introduce unusual characters in his novels. Humor and bizarre ideas seemed to be at the heart of his work but his human characterizations were loved by fans and colleagues alike. Perhaps his development was Alaska Saedelaere; although created by Willi Voltz, Griese developed that character strongly in his work.
Griese died of heart failure on April 29, 1996 in Bad Ems. Hubert Haensel took over his duties with issue 1824.
We would like to remember Peter Griese as he was: a dear friend, a great author, and person whom we would like to preserve in our memories for a long time.

A Preface to the Last Peter Greise Novel (#1827)
by Robert
Feldhoff
Dear Friend, Dear Reader
The novel Fluch durch Bröhnder ("Flight through Bröhnder" - #1827) is based on notes on the last novel left behind by Peter Griese.
A Perry Rhodan-manuscript follows a certain style. That has to be because it is produced by a team of authors on a weekly basis. In addition, a considerable amount of discipline is needed. Each author knows that he must give up a certain amount of personal freedom for the sake of the series. This is something that Peter Griese knew and even liked because it was his work on Atlan and Perry Rhodan that allowed him to leave his former profession and become solely an author.
Yet, within the restrictions of authoring for Perry Rhodan, there are many freedoms if you know how to use them - and Peter knew how to use them as few other authors did. Griese-novels came alive through the unique creations of their author. Such creations filled the Alaska Saedelaere novels which we had entrusted to Peter in the formation of the new cycle of stories. Dorata, Kummerog's Skin, the "beloved little ones" like Lanagh and Scheep were taken from vague descriptions or created by him alone.
The story of the Vegaonish Collective revolves about a Griese-idea that was developed for the Exposition-Factory shortly before he revealed it in Exposé 1826/27.
Peter set down his idea of a tragic yet, at the same time, hopeful end of a people but, unfortunately, did not live long enough to expand the idea to a complete story. When he died he left behind the finished issue, Die Schrottsammler ("The Scrap Collectors" - #1826), and a fragment of the following novel, Flucht durch Bröhnder (#1827). Because Peter had discussed his ideas for the Vegaonish Collective more with me than the other authors the almost impossible task of completing the manuscript fell on me.
One must know how a series novel functions. The buildup to an apparently inevitable catastrophe, the development of a plot twist the reader wasn't expecting, Peter had a talent for such devices. What devices he had in mind for this story we will never know. Thus, the story is certainly different from what Peter would have written. I have tried to complete it as close to Peter Griese's intent as possible.

Date of Birth: March 22, 1921
Date of Death: October 6, 1995
Perry Rhodan authors and fans were
shocked to learn of Johnny Bruck's death in a traffic accident
on Friday October 6. There is little question that
Mr. Bruck's covers were part of the reason that the Perry Rhodan series
became the largest science fiction story in the world. A prolific artist he
contributed almost 1,800 covers for the Perry Rhodan series and several
hundred for the Atlan series, the Perry Rhodan pocket books, the
Perry Rhodan hardbacks, and numerous other Pabel Moewig science fiction
publications.
He began his career as a photolithographer. During WWII he escaped execution by a Nazi firing squad only by the capitulation of Germany. After the war he worked as a journalist and illustrator for a variety of newspapers such as the World and the Hannover Press. It was at this time that various publishing houses began looking for cover illustrations for their books. Bruck moved from Hamburg to Munich in 1959 and concentrated on drawings and paintings. He created covers for crime, sdventure, and war books as well as illustrations for hunting magazines. When the Perry Rhodan series began in 1961 Bruck began to illustrate the the covers. He showed an amazing talent for transferring the imaginations of the authors into graphic reality.
His representations were never generic. They always seemed alive and even the faces of his aliens possessed enough life to make them real to the viewer. When Bruck painted the miracles and horrors of the universe they showed a future that was so real and alive that it was as though one were looking through a window onto the day after tomorrow. One saw exploding stars, circling galaxies, black holes, and cosmic objects at the edge of the universe. His images of people, robots, spaceships, and strange planets were so real that it was as though he had seen them himself.
And perhaps he had, if only in his dreams? In any case, Johnny Bruck, we will never forget you.

(P.R.B.C.B.S.)
(Perry Rhodan Briefclub Bully's Schreibtisch)
This club was organized in 1978 and is one of
the oldest clubs in German fandom. Since then the Desk has published an enormous
number of publications, arranged fan conventions, and survived and mastered a
variety of crises. The slogan of the club is, not without reason, "Madness with
Method".
Presently, the Desk has about 90 members with ages ranging from 17 to 64. The Desk is a democratic club with all decisions open to vote by all members. The executive committee, the Dreier-Team (the editors of Clubnachrichten ("Club Messages"), the archivist, and the treasurer are in constant contact with each other. The elections for club posts are held semi-annually. Any member of the club can be nominated for any post.
The Clubnachrichten (CN) is the heart of the club. It appears montly, runs 72 to 80 pages, and contains reader letter, stories, articles, art, discussion, and club and fan news. Regular categories are "Horror-Books", "Archives", "Fandom Information", "Comic Characters" (information and reviews), and "Perry Rhodan Subjects" (news and discussions). Only contributions from the members appear in CN. The magazine has appeared monthly since the Desk's foundation with a few exceptions. Thus, over 210 issues have been published.
In addition to CN the club publishes several other fanzines. The Diskussionsblatt ("Discussion Sheet") appears monthly and addresses questions presented both within and without the Desk. Data Bully ("Bell's Data"), the "Infozine of the Computer User" appears every other month along with PRBCBS-Almanach, the Desk's lexicon. In addition, there are irregular publications such as Quasar (a fanzine to which non-members can contribute), Sonderclubnachrichten ("Special Club Messages" - containing material that did not fit into CN for one reason or another), and numerous other fanzines and egozines which are distributed to members free of cost.
These are paid for out of the members' dues. These amount to about 4.50 DeutschMark a month [international dues are, likely, higher]. They can be paid ahead or monthly. In addition, the club will accept volunteer activity in lieu of some of the dues. Failure to pay the dues will result in instant expulsion from the club. Members are expected to actively participate in the Desk including contributions and voting. More information on the club's requirements is presented in the Almanch.
Each year Bullys (awards) are given out for best story, article, illustration, and several other categories (including for volunteer activities).

The Bridge into Infinity
a Multimedia-CD-ROM Game by Mainscreen
The plot of the game is based on issues 1800
to 1805 in which the user, as Perry Rhodan, decides the fate of humanity.
Mysterious events are occuring on the "new" planet Trokan which endanger the
entire Sol System. Perry Rhodan's attempts to unravel the mystery make for a
riveting adventure on the computer.
He who would reach the Bridge to Infinity must exert his skill, intuition, tactical knowledge, and reflexes to the limit.
To produce the CD, Mainscreen used the same technology that is used by many high-budget theatrical movies. Thus, the user sees the game through high-quality graphics. There is a special clip of the Gilgamesh during a docking maneuver.
If you would like to see more, Mainscreen has made a demo available.
The game is scheduled to release during the second quarter of 1997.

The subject of the first set of cards in this
game is the pursuit of the Galactic Riddle, but the game is so constructed that
future expansions will fit seamlessly into the original set and continue to
follow the story line. In the first release, the Third Power you will
encounter old aquaintances such as Harno, the energy being.
Each card shows Characteristics Symbols, a large image, and text (such as the information provided for Harno).
Text:
Allegiance and Race: Terrans / Unique

Many important planets, such as Terra and Ferrol, are covered by the cards as well as neighboring planets such as Rofus in the Vega-System and Goszul's Planet. FanPro developers have also included nearly forgotten places, such as the Beta-Albireo-System (discovered in 1982), which was the site of the first major conflict between Terrans and Springers.
Text:
A troop and any desired number of people may be assigned
to a mission here.

It even integrates one of the major inconvenience of space-travel early in the series: Materialization-Shock. As in the stories the main characters, Perry Rhodan and Reginald Bell gradually become immune to the unpleasant effect of hyper-jumps. Other, less experienced, space travellers have no such protection against Materialization-Shock.
Text:

Lastly, collector and tactician will appreciate the Unikat-Symbol. Such cards provide an important source of tension and high playability to the game. The cards of the first release have been severly limited and color-coded to distinguish them from later releases. Naturally, the original releases will be of greater value.

By mid-September the card-packs should be availible for purchase.
Forthcoming booster packs includes Topsiders and Springer and Arkonides
